Before you post this

Early voting dates come from each state's early-voting law as summarised by the National Conference of State Legislatures, plus official state and county calendars where published. Counties often add extra days, sites and hours, and some only open their main election office at first.

Registration deadlines are calculated from each state's "days before the election" rule (NCSL, updated May 2026) counted back from 3 November 2026. Where a deadline falls on a weekend or holiday some states roll it to the next working day, and some set different deadlines for registering online, by post and in person. Where methods differ, this page shows the latest one so that nobody is wrongly told it is too late, and names the method in the note. Treat every registration date here as approximate and confirm it with your own election office.

Postal ballot return rules come from NCSL Table 11, updated 25 September 2026, and cover ballots returned by post. Hand-delivered ballots have earlier deadlines in several states. This page does not carry postal ballot request deadlines, which vary widely — ask your local office.

Anyone voting should confirm their own site, hours and deadlines with their local election office.

If you have missed your registration deadline

Do not assume you cannot vote. Many states let you register in person during early voting or at the polls on the day. Check your state's note above. If your state has no such provision and you believe you should be on the roll, go to your polling place anyway, ask for a provisional ballot, and ring 866-OUR-VOTE before you leave. A provisional ballot is counted once your eligibility is confirmed, and in several states it is the only route left.
